Crumlin Integrated College’s MFL Department is dedicated to assisting our students in becoming fluent speakers of the language. We wish for our students to:
Pupils at Key Stage 3 are taught both French and Spanish in Year 8 on a carousel basis, with the option available to continue each language in Years 9 and 10.
The outline of work for KS3 is;
Unit 1: Introduction to phonics, greetings, inquiries, name, residence, personality, passion, counting numbers 1–31, age, birthdays, siblings, spelling, the definite and indefinite articles and adjective agreements.
Unit 2: School-related topics, present-tense verbs, opinion expressions, adjectives, school facilities, teacher descriptions, activities during breaks and time phrases.
Term 1: Family, details, eyes and hair, numbers, relatives, and residence.
Term 2: Location in the town, description, café, cuisine, activities in town, the near future, and timekeeping.
Term 3: Stores, shopping genres, products available for purchase, description, adjectival agreement, clothing and fashion trends.
Term 1: My hobbies, films, birthdays, weekly activities, the near future.
Term 2: Jobs, tasks you have to do, conditional tense, a typical work day, personal qualities, describing your job.
Term 3: Health, food, a healthy diet, likes, dislikes and opinions, stem-changing verbs, daily routine, illness, body parts and direct object pronouns.
Furthermore, in Year 10 pupils are given the opportunity to undertake the OCN level 2 qualification in Modern Languages, which has a grade equivalency of a grade B at GCSE.
At Key Stage 4 , we adhere to the CCEA GCSE Spanish specification, which fosters students’ passion for the language while boosting their proficiency in the four essential language skills of speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Three learning contexts offer a great deal of diversity and opportunity for research, comprehension, description, discussion, and opinion sharing. The following contexts are studied;
• identity, lifestyle and culture
• local, national, international and global areas of interest
• school life, studies and the world of work.
There is an external examination for each of the specification’s four assessment units, each worth 25% of the overall mark;
• Unit 1: Listening
• Unit 2: Speaking
• Unit 3: Reading
• Unit 4: Writing
